Mickey and Minnie's Journey from Reluctant Smooch to Married Bliss
Monday Magic: She jumped out of a plane to avoid his kiss, but it seems Mickey's charm eventually won her over – and then some!
Mickey Mouse first met Minerva “Minnie” Mouse (no relation) in the 1928 short “Plane Crazy.” The young flapper mouse was invited on Mickey’s plane. During the flight, he requests a kiss, but she doth protest. Eventually, Mickey tricks her into a kiss. Her reaction is to do what any good-natured mouse would do – parachute out of the plane.
While Minnie was a bit reluctant at first to accept any affection from Mickey, they have grown a lot closer during the past decades.
In the Sept. 30, 1933 issue of Film Pictorial magazine, Walt Disney wrote: “In private life, Mickey is married to Minnie. A lot of people have written to him asking this question because sometimes he appears to be married to her in his films and other times still courting her. What it really amounts to is that Minnie is, for screen purposes, his leading lady. If the story calls for a romantic courtship, then Minnie is the girl; but when the story requires a married couple, then they appear as man and wife. In the studio, we have decided that they are married already.”
Here Mickey gives Minnie a little kiss after a dance on Main Street in Disnelyand.
